1. General information
Subject that tries to transmit sociological knowledge in a non-dogmatic way. Trying that the recipients of the course can identify the problems of the society in which they live, taking into account its historicalprocesses , changes and global relations.
Through Sociology we will try to help students become familiar with the necessary tools to explore and research, to better understand other subjects, as well as to increase their general culture.
These approaches and goals are aligned with the various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030, so that the acquisition of the learning results of the subject provides training and competence to contribute to some extent to their achievement.
2. Learning results
Upon completion of the subject, the student will be able to:
Understanding the functioning of human societies and social trends
Carry out an analysis of the social reality, from a sociological perspective
Identify problems and analyze relevant situations in the professional field of social work
In order to pass this course, the following results must be demonstrated:
Master the basic concepts of sociology, necessary for the study of the other subjects of the degree.
Know the main sociological schools.
Have a greater critical capacity for the analysis of social reality.
Having passed the course, students should have acquired and understood the fundamental knowledge of sociology and will have familiarized with the contributions of the main sociological currents. Necessary knowledge for the study of other related subjects of the term.

- Object, field and interest of sociology.
- Main paradigms of sociology
- Methodological foundations and techniques of observation in sociology
- Social nature of human action: social reality
- Culture: notion and characteristics
- The socialization process: How does the individual become a social being?
- The person in society: role and status
- Groups and organizations
- Social institutions
- Order, control and social deviation
It is advisable to have the recommended textbook available from the beginning of the course to prepare for the subject: MACIONIS, J. and PLUMER, K. (2011) Sociology. Prentice Hall. Madrid. 4th Edition.
4. Academic activities
Presentation/discussion on the theoretical contents.
Analysis of specific situations and cases.
Open debates on various topics of social interest. Both in the classroom and through the virtual forum.
Text comments on articles of sociological interest.
Students will be introduced to the criteria of participation, active learning and critical attitude. Granting a margin of initiative in the selection of readings and practical work topics. Periodically, the texts that should be read before the classroom sessions to enrich the classroom discussionswill be indicated.
5. Assessment system
CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT
In order to pass the subject, students must participate in at least 80% of the sessions and pass both parts of the subject.
1. Theoretical written test (50% of the grade). It will be carried out during the period foreseen for the tests of continuous assessment
2. Practical exercises (50% of the grade). They will be carried out throughout the course in the sessions established for this purpose.
It is essential to complete all the exercises and deliver them within the required deadline. Included as a practical activity, it is will teach the course "Information and computer skills", with a valuation of 0.5 points.
SINGLE ASSESSMENT
In order to pass the subejct, all three parts of the subject must be passed.
1. Submission of a paper on "Analysis of social reality" consisting of the reading of press articles related to the contents of the subject, chosen by the students, and the writing of ten critical comments on each of the articles (30% of the grade).
2. Oral interview on the work done (20% of the grade).
3. Written test (50% of the grade).
